In order to make best use of mechanical seals, appropriate auxiliary equipment and piping are required. The sketches shown on the right exemplify different piping arrangements.
Numbering is based on the api standard.

The reservoir is usually continuously vented to a vapor recovery system.

Pressurized external barrier fluid reservoir supplying clean fluid to the seal chamber. Circulation is by an internal pumping ring. Reservoir presuere is greater than the process pressure being sealed.
